Sometimes I wonder what the rest of the world must think of how our politicians manage and govern our little island. Okay, maybe nobody but the people, who call our little paradise home, is looking or even cares. I have no doubt that the rest of the world has far more important things on their minds, which have a far greater impact on their lives than the comings and goings on this tiny corner of Spain.

However, in a time of economic crisis, where an eclectic array of austerity measures have been imposed upon us, it appears that, not only do we have to suffer the consequences of a worldwide financial meltdown, but we also have to live with errors in administration that affect those of us who feel financial hardship the most.

As the schools prepare to close for the summer break, many of the Island’s residents would usually be looking forward to a well deserved and affordable holiday. For many Lanzarote families, that won’t be possible this year as it has been confirmed that, along with the announcements from local councils that they are preventing campervans from utilising the coast at Arrieta, Playa Quemada, Caleta de Caballo and Playa La Garita (where families usually flock to in the summer months) the campsite at Papagayo will also definitely not be opening at all, this year.

The campsite usually opens around Easter time, but did not this year when it was ‘discovered’ that it does not have a license and the site will now remain closed until somewhere in the region of 60,000 Euros can be found to pay for improvements and facilities that bring it in line with the license requirements.

What will the 4,000 people whom usually utilize the Papagayo campsite during the summer months, do for their annual vacation do now?

In a recent meeting with between local campers and Mayoress for Yaiza, Gladys Acuña, despite the representatives of the island’s campers providing reasonable solutions, such as opening the campsite with limited facilities, campers providing their own generators for electricity and water being delivered and waste being collected daily. But Sra Acuña remained firm in her resolve and reiterated that the site would NOT open this year at all because of the lack of available funding.

The Association of Campers & Caravaners commented “We can understand the councils clamping down on illegal campsites where there are no services but why not address the problem by creating some legal ones? The problem could be relieved in the short term by opening Papagayo even without its licence; it hasn’t been an issue for the past ten years”.

It is difficult to understand how the sudden realization of a lack of a license can change the reality of Papagayo campsite’s viability and commit an action which is tantamount to robbing hard working families of what is probably the only holiday they can afford or will have; so yet again, those of us with the least, miss out the most.
